Restoration

He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness. For His name’s sake. — Psalms 23:3 NKJV

Though I was very familiar with Psalm 23, I recognized something for the first time. The third verse describing God’s restoration lies between a reference to “still waters” and a “walk through the valley of the shadow of death.” These are vastly different circumstances.

Perhaps our ability to navigate life’s treacherous journeys is found in choosing to be still despite our hectic lives. Even Jesus left the crowds and His disciples to enter quiet time with the Father.

Life is challenging. Current events drain our energy. Yet, our God offers rest and restoration that equips us for the worrisome seasons to come. Our emotional and mental fatigue are alleviated when we accept the opportunity for renewal. The psalmist’s verse concerning restoration immediately follows the reference to still waters. God’s word is not random. Our merciful Father sustains us with His living water.

Unfortunately, we don’t always follow. We easily dismiss the Spirit's promptings in our misguided quests to find restoration through people and things. We cannot hear God when our minds are muddled with pings, dings, and outside chatter. But in quiet times free of distractions, we can recognize the Lord’s paths of righteousness—His plans and our purpose.

God’s direction toward tranquil spaces offers peace that is otherwise unobtainable. He offers an oasis in our deserts that we cannot create alone. God strengthens us not merely spiritually, but emotionally and physically as well. Our bodies often reflect what is churning beneath the surface.

Many of us struggle through our challenging times, defeated and hopeless. We may win an occasional battle, but we can never win the war without the Lord. We don’t deserve God’s mercy, but our Father restores and guides His children for His name's sake.

Everything we need is found in Him. When we choose to be still and subsequently refreshed, we can recognize the paths of righteousness our Father would have us follow.

Never fear, God offers the restoration that allows us to walk confidently through dark places.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I come before You with a grateful heart, seeking restoration during my struggles. I ask for our gentle hand to heal my soul, to mend the broken places within me, and to grant me peace in the chaos of life. Help me to find stillness in Your presence, where I can hear Your voice guiding me along the paths of righteousness. I trust that You are with me, even in my darkest moments, providing strength and hope when I feel weary. Lord, renew my spirit and refresh my mind as I surrender my burdens to You. Thank You for Your unwavering love and mercy; may I always walk confidently in the light of Your assurance. Amen.

Your Turn:
1. In what ways do we often seek restoration from external sources rather than turning to God for the peace and renewal we truly need?
2. How can we intentionally create moments of stillness in our daily lives to better perceive God's guidance and presence amidst our challenges?

We can't hear God's voice when there's so much noise in our head
