“From the time he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the Lord blessed the household of the Egyptian because of Joseph. The blessing of the Lord was on everything Potiphar had, both in the house and in the field.” Genesis 39:5 NIV
I have always been a person who truly understands the interdependence of people. We are connected in various ways, some of which we are unable to fully understand. It is easy to believe our actions are singular, only impacting the one who committed the act. In reality, our actions, no matter how big or small, have power. Our actions impact not only ourselves, but every person in our vicinity, including family and friends.
The favor of God works in a similar way.
Favor allows us to conquer situations that require none other than God to either fix or navigate. Favor also serves as a shield of protection.
Just like our actions, favor impacts those around us and any space we inhabit.
We see this by reading Genesis 39. Joseph was bought by Potiphar, an Egyptian who was one of Pharaoh’s officials. But even in the midst of this, the Lord was still with Joseph, and the people and places Joseph was around were blessed by his very presence.
That is how powerful favor is; it is not just limited to that person. It can be passed down to those who are even in the same proximity as us. It is generational.
I firmly believe that I am still blessed by the residue of favor from the people who came before me. My grandmother is such a woman of God in deed and in faith. Her heart is pure and she has truly committed her life to serving God. Anytime I enter her home, just being in her presence, I immediately feel peace and blessings all around me. That certainly confirms how God’s favor can attach itself to multiple recipients.
Thinking of favor reminds me that I am not simply living for myself. My blessings are not reserved for just me. Not only do I want to be blessed, but I want the spaces that I enter and the people I encounter to be just as blessed.
